Patient lists and waiting rooms at many of Perth’s medical centres are being overwhelmed by an increase in people suffering from sleep disorders.

This poses a significant burden on General Practitioners and specialist doctors as well as risks to people’s health, and has a big impact on the Australian economy.

The Sleep Health Foundation estimates the cost of issues related to sleep disorders at $5.1 billion a year in health care, while the reduction in life quality caused by sleep disorders is at an equivalent of $31.4 billion annually.

Absolute Sleep is one of a small number of dental clinics nationally that specialises in caring for sleep sufferers using oral appliances and other treatments. We use our experience and qualifications in Dental Sleep Medicine to work collaboratively with specialists and general practitioners to help improve patients’ symptoms.

Oral Medicine Expertise

Absolute Sleep was founded by reputed dental sleep medicine practitioners Dr Christopher Pantin and Dr Valerie Bennett. For the past 25 years they have worked to become trusted names in Perth dental sleep medicine.

Dr Pantin is an Associate Professor of the University of Western Australia (UWA), where he instigated the development of the Graduate Diploma in Dental Sleep Medicine.

His interest in sleep disorders dates back more than 25 years. In 1995, in conjunction with Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Dr Pantin co-authored a landmark paper that was published in the American Journal of Critical Care Medicine on the efficacy of treating Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) and snoring with oral appliances.

This was followed in 1999 with publication of the first paper evaluating at the side-effects of wearing oral appliances for treatment of sleep disordered breathing.

Dr Pantin is a founding member of the Western Australian Sleep Disorders Research Institute (WASDRI), having been involved since its inception in 2000.

Dr Bennett is a graduate of the only university-based post-graduate degree in Dental Sleep Medicine.

Absolute Sleep works closely with all sleep specialists, selected ENT surgeons in Perth as well as General Practitioners.

Patient Assessments

The STOP-Bang questionnaire helps doctors determine the pre-test probability of a patient suffering from OSA.

Access the questionnaire by clicking here. A high STOP-Bang score indicates a high probability of OSA.

According to findings by the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study, OSA is the most prevalent sleep-breathing disturbance, affecting 24 per cent of men and nine per cent of women in the general population.
